Session F: Thinking Scientifically About Everyday Experiences: Developing Scientific Explanations

Connie HvidstenLevel: 4-12
Content Area: Science
Presenter: Connie Hvidsten, UC Davis, School of Education

One goal of science instruction is to help students make sense of their world and be able to form scientifically sound explanations for natural phenomena. However, the in-class explanations produced by students often lack deep thinking or strong evidence supporting their conclusions. In this session you will use a framework – developed by teachers – to help kids connect their experiences, observations and data with scientific principles to create well supported scientific explanations. In using the framework, students are provided opportunities to talk more, write more, think critically, and organize information in logical ways that translate to clear speaking and writing.
