Academic Literacy Summit 2009

Academic Literacy:
The Language of Content and Community
February 4, 2009
Thank you so much for helping to make the Second Annual Academic Literacy Summit a success!
This year, the theme of the Summit was Academic Literacy: The Language of Content and Community. The day began with a welcome and introductions from Mary Sandy, Summit Planning Committee Co-Chair and Director, CRESS Center, UC Davis. Prof. Steven Athanases, Chair of the Graduate Group in Education, UC Davis, and Juliet Wahleithner, Summit Planning Committee Co-Chair and Ph.D. Student in the School of Education, UC Davis, shared their findings from data collected at the Academic Literacy Summit 2008. The highlight of the morning session, however, was they keynote address given by Prof. Olga Vásquez of UC San Diego whose talk, Lessons from the Community: Multi-literacies and technology-based pedagogy, featured an overview of the out-of-school literacy program she founded, La Clase Magica.
Participants then attended both morning and afternoon breakout sessions, heard from a panel of second language students reflecting on their own experiences with academic literacy, and reflected together on their learning from the day.
